In this still life I wanted to create a painting that was colourful and provided a mixture of both floral and interesting objects on the theme of �reflections�. I experimented with dozens of different arrangements, all placed on a large mirror and with a black background.
After many attempts and hundreds of photographs, I eventually settled on this layout. What I found exciting about it was the reflections, not only in the mirror but between the objects in the painting. As you can see, it was created in May, when the peony in the back garden was in full flower.
Award-winning artist, Richard Harpum, paints in a realist style, paying meticulous attention to detail. His medium of choice is acrylics on canvas or board but he also uses oils and paints watercolour florals. Richard's primary focus is landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and gardens but he also paints portraits, still lifes and florals. The effective use of light is a key ingredient to all of Richard’s works and he spends a great deal of time before starting a painting in selecting a composition that provides both drama and contrast.
