In 2008 I met up with a friend and we undertook the spectacular 10 mile coastal hike from Hartland Quay to the fishing village of Clovelly in north Devon.
Set into a steep hillside, Clovelly's main street winds its way down the 400 foot hill through traditional whitewashed cottages to the picturesque harbour. Traffic is banned and the hill is so steep that sledges are used for transport.
Unusually, the village is privately owned and has been by the same family since 1738. Their policy is to care for Clovelly and keep it in the style of the mid-19th Century, making it very unusual, with a charm of its own.
When we arrived in the late afternoon, the sun was casting strong shadows down the hill and I took a large number of photographs, several of which were used in composing this scene, which is taken from the breakwater. Award-winning artist, Richard Harpum, paints in a realist style, paying meticulous attention to detail. His medium of choice is acrylics on canvas or board but he also uses oils and paints watercolour florals. Richard's primary focus is landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and gardens but he also paints portraits, still lifes and florals. The effective use of light is a key ingredient to all of Richard’s works and he spends a great deal of time before starting a painting in selecting a composition that provides both drama and contrast. Born in Bromley, England, in 1951, Richard has had a passion for drawing and painting from a very young age. As a youngster, he was always drawing and became a prolific painter after he received an...

Jerry Bokowski
Richard, You have taken acrylic painting to a whole new level. The detail here is mind boggling! I enjoyed your description as well. F/L Jerry
Richard Harpum replied:
Thanks again, Jerry, This was the first painting I did (back in 2008) where I used a drafting table instead of an easel. I gave up on the easel because I was getting acute shoulder pain. However, the added benefit was that my ability to paint detail, which suits my character, was significantly increased. The downside was that it now seems to take longer to complete my paintings! Best wishes with your excellent work.
